A practical moving checklist

A useful moving checklist connects dates, belongings and access. Start with the arrangements you cannot change easily, then work through what must be packed, carried and ready at the next address.

Put both properties on the same timeline

Record when the current home must be handed over and when the next property becomes available. Add building move windows, key collection and any agreed loading arrangements. Distinguish a preferred moving date from a confirmed appointment, and tell the team which deadlines are fixed.

If there is a gap between homes, decide what stays with the household and what may need planned storage. Keep one current version of the timeline rather than separate messages that leave different people working from different dates.

Give each large item a destination

Walk through every room, including basements, garages and other collection areas. Mark furniture for the next home, storage, an approved donation or removal. Estimate packed cartons separately and flag unusual or fragile pieces with photographs and dimensions.

Keep undecided furniture on a decisions list until its destination is settled. A piece that is being sold or donated should not quietly remain in the moving inventory. Update the request when the amount or destination of the load changes.

Define the help around the inventory

Choose the rooms needing packing, the furniture that may need a handling discussion and the arrival tasks you want considered. A full furniture move can still involve only a kitchen pack or selected-room unpacking. State those boundaries clearly.

Photograph access at both addresses, from the likely loading point to the final rooms. Include stairs, turns, elevators and any separate entrance. Ask the property contact about arrangements that the moving team cannot confirm on your behalf.

Keep the final evening and first night usable

Prepare a bag with documents, medication, chargers, toiletries and everyday essentials. Keep valuables and keys in your care. Choose where the first-night bedding and kitchen items will go so they are not mixed into a storage or later-delivery load.

Before loading, compare the furniture labels with the latest inventory. After loading, assign a final property walk-through and key handover. At the new home, use matching room names on doors and cartons to make placement decisions easier.

Your working checklist

  • One timeline with fixed and preferred dates distinguished.
  • A furniture list, carton estimate and separate service list.
  • Destination labels for storage, donations and extra stops.
  • Photos of access at both addresses.
  • A first-night kit and an assigned final walk-through.

Before confirming the work

Before confirming the plan, ask what still needs to be reviewed: the inventory, access, materials, additional stops or timing. A complete request should describe the household that will actually move, not an early room count that no longer matches the load.
